Royal Carribean, Cancun, Mexico
I consider myself a bit of a “beach enthusiast,” and I’ve been lucky to travel to all different kinds of beaches (rocky and picturesque in New England, black sand and tropical in Hawaii, beautiful but unexpectedly of the nude variety in Greece…you get the idea).
However, if I had to pick just one to be the beach where I’d want to be stranded above all others, it would have to be the small patch of beach in front of the Royal Caribbean resort in Cancun, Mexico.
Why that beach?
Cancun has become my go-to destination ever since I was 12, when my family got a timeshare week and began making the annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage trip to Mexico.
So, why that beach? Why would I choose to get “stranded” there, year after year, and on Turkey-Day no less? For starters, it’s the quintessential tropical beach — turquoise blue water, pearly soft sand, palapas down the coastline as far as the eye can see. It’s paradise.
But then, there’s the people. Over the years I’ve made friends with people from all over the world on that little stretch of beach. From the staff, who know us by name even after a whole year has passed, to our fellow travelers who come back for that week every year, too. We’ve made friendships that transcend vacation. We call it our “Cancun Family” and it’s no wonder that when you pull up to the resort that you’re greeted with “Welcome Home.”
What’s the perfect soundtrack for your beach?
For me, nothing beats the soothing soundtrack of the waves.
What’s the perfect drink for your beach?
The Painkiller! I know it sounds a bit intense, but it’s actually the perfect beachside drink, and easy to make (wherever in the world you may be!):
2 oz dark rum
1 oz cream of coconut
4 oz pineapple juice
1 oz orange juice
Shake all ingredients and pour over crushed ice. Sprinkle generously with fresh nutmeg and top with a paper umbrella. Drink and repeat. (And, remember, it’s always Happy Hour somewhere!)
What three other things would you bring with you?
While you can find a recent packing list on my personal travel blog, my top items for this tropical maroon-ment would have to be a bikini, sunscreen and a good travel guide so I can plan my next adventure.
And if I had a little extra room, I’d bring a Survival Guide…just in case I become permanently stranded! Although, on this beach, would that really be a bad thing?
