Ipanema Beach, Brazil

Summer beach season is over here in the U.S. But what if it didn’t have to be? What if you could be stranded on a beach somewhere in the world and have an endless summer? What beach would you pick? We asked members of the Travel Channel staff to share their beach and what they’d bring to their sandy slice of heaven.

Renee DeLuca beachOn which world beach would you most like to be stranded?

Ipanema Beach in Brazil. If it can inspire a song, it has to be beautiful, right?

Why that beach?

Brazilians have a zest for life that translates from the street to the beach. Inhibitions go out the door, and the beach becomes an extension of the night clubs and bars. From girls pretending the white sand is a runway, to shirtless guys playing futbol along the water, Ipanema is THE place to socialize in Rio. It’s people-watching at its finest, and I would gladly partake in it from the comfort of a beach chair.

Ipanema Beach was also once named the world’s sexiest beach by the Travel Channel. I’ve always heard that Brazilians have no qualms about flaunting what they’ve got on the beach (hello, tiny bathing suits!), and I think it would be refreshing to see a culture where people embrace all body types. Although when everyone from there looks like Gisele, it’s a lot easier to put that bikini on.

What’s the perfect soundtrack for your beach?

Believe it or not, for this beach excursion I’d go sans music. Like I said earlier, I’m really into people watching, and I love to listen to people’s interactions on the beach instead of drowning it all out with music. The combination of crashing waves, kids running around and laughing and Brazilians speaking in their sultry accents would be a perfect “soundtrack” for my beach experience.

What’s the perfect drink for your beach?

My friend Ben has the ability to make delicious mixed drinks just by throwing random ingredients together. They usually consist of some sort of juice, a few generous pours of vodka or rum, and whatever else he finds in the refrigerator, and they always turn out amazing. I’d let him put his mixology skills to the test and make the perfect drink.

What three other things would you bring with you?

Have you ever heard the rumor that some people are addicted to chap stick? I think I fall into that category. Without it, I constantly worry about the next time I’ll be able to apply it. Chap stick would definitely be the first thing I put in my bag.

I know it sounds shallow, but I’d also bring Bradley Cooper to keep me company. See why the chap stick is important?

I’d also bring the book Anna Karenina, which has been sitting unread on my bookshelf for two years now. It’s not exactly beach reading, but I need to cross it off my list! Something tells me the people might be distracting though…
